Organic viticulture program
Viticultural experts will discuss organic viticulture at
the next meeting of the Sonoma County Vineyard Technical Group
at 7:30 p.m. July 18 at the Kendall-Jackson Wine Center, 5007
Fulton Road in Santa Rosa.
The title of the program is "To the Edge and Back. Where
Organic Viticulture and New Conventional Farming Meet."
Speakers are Phil Coturri, an organic grape grower from Glen
Ellen; Devon Gordon of Ag Unlimited in Ukiah and Jane Sooby,
technical program coordinator for the Organic Farming Research
Foundation in Santa Cruz.
The program is open to all interested grape growers. The
evening starts with a wine social at 6:30 p.m.
Tasting room cooperative
Seven small-scale Napa Valley wineries are joining in the
Vintners' Collective Tasting Room that opens Aug. 17 in the
Pfeiffer Building at 1245 Main St. in Napa.
The cooperative tasting room will feature wines from Mason
Cellars, Melka Wines, Vinoce Vineyards, Cafaro Cellars, Patz
& Hall, Elan Vineyards and Mi Sueno Cellars.
The Pfeiffer Building is the oldest stone building in Napa.
It was built in 1875 and over the years has been home to the
Stone Saloon, Sam Kee Laundry and the Andrews Meat Co.
Rootstock ID course
A short course on rootstock identification is 8:30 a.m. to
4 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Viticulture Field House on the campus of
the University of California, Davis.
Andrew Walker, an associate professor with the department
of viticulture and enology, will teach the workshop. The class
is designed for viticulturists, nursery workers and winery
field staff. Walker will introduce students to 20 of the most
important grapevine rootstocks, combining lectures with field
demonstrations.
The session also will include a discussion of new
biochemical methods of identification such as isozyme analysis
and DNA fingerprinting.
