2014 Tournesol Sauvignon Blanc, Coombsville
Winemaker tasting notes:
Pale straw color with star bright clarity. Aromatic with white flower, stony minerality and pink grapefruit with subtle notes of peach, lemon, honey and basil. With time in the glass, softens to reveal more tropical qualities of pineapple and passion fruit. The bright acidity is crisp and refreshing whether served chilled or nearer to room temperature. Silky mouthfeel and body with elegant finish to be enjoyed now and for the next several years. Pairs well with ceviche, oysters and seafood, or cheeses and charcuterie.
2014 is the third year of a trilogy of outstanding vintages in the Napa Valley and will also be remembered as the “earthquake” vintage as Napa experienced a 6.0 earthquake on August 24th that damaged many homes, businesses and wineries in the valley. The long growing season with moderate temperatures and lack of rains during harvest made for nearly ideal growing conditions and superb quality fruit.
The Sauvignon Blanc grapes were sourced from two vineyards in the Coombsville AVA: the Farella Vineyard and Hestia Farm, both located just north of Tournesol in the south east corner of the Napa Valley. The Sauvignon Blanc clone at Farella is known as the Old Wente clone or Clone 1 from UC Davis, which originated from Chateau d’Yquem in the 1880’s. The balance of the wine comes from the unique Musqué Clone of Sauvignon Blanc, which was brought to California from Bordeaux in 1962, and further complements the blend with exotic aromatics. The addition of 7% Sémillon creates subtle texture and depth.
Coombsville’s Tufa ash soils de-emphasize the vegetative tendencies of the variety and highlight its more subtle fruit nuances. The Tournesol Sauvignon Blanc - Sémillon walks the narrow line between freshness and richness, showing just how complex the varietal can be when grown in the right soils.
