2012 Roy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley
Roy Estate's 17 acre vineyard was planted in 2001 and 2002 by Pina Vineyard Management under the direction of Helen Turley. The vineyard is divided into seventeen blocks, twelve blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon, four blocks of Merlot and one block of Petit Verdot; located nn the eastern side of Napa Valley, in the foothills of the Vaca Mountains.
WINEMAKER PHILIPPE MELKA'S TASTING NOTES:
The 2012 Roy Estate Cabernet Sauvignon opens up to notes of rose petals, blackberry jam and cocoa followed by tobacco, bing cherries and a touch of pencil shavings. In the mouth, a soft attack of shaved dark chocolate, sweet vanilla, mocha and caramel adds great complexity to the beautiful dark fruit. The mid-palate weight is layered & well balanced with seductive and silky integrated tannins evolving to some smoke notes coming from the new Taransaud French Oak. This expressive and harmonious cabernet is a stellar expression of this unique mini-valley vineyard location, leaving us with that signature powerful, long and lingering ROY finish.
For optimum enjoyment of this wine, please decant and serve at about 64 ºF.

FROM ROBERT PARKER'S Wine Advocate:
2012 ROY Estate Cabernet Sauvignon
A Cabernet Sauvignon Dry Red Table Wine from Napa, North Coast, California, USA
Source: Wine Advocate #221 (Oct. 2015)
The 2012 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate may be the finest wine this winery has made to date. It is a tribute to Shirley Roy, who has carried on so impressively in the absence of her husband. A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot harvested between October 10 and 19, this full-bodied, opulent Cabernet reveals abundant notes of blackberries, cassis, licorice, barbecue smoke, roasted meats, bouquet garni and vanillin. With terrific intensity, purity, length and density as well as sweet tannins, it should drink well for two decades.
This is still a somewhat under-the-radar, small estate dedicated to world-class wines run by Shirley Roy, who continues to be inspired by the work she and her deceased husband began this 17-acre vineyard estate tucked in one of Napa Valley’s more secluded areas, Soda Canyon. The vineyard, which is in the foothills of the Vaca Mountains, continues to go from strength to strength. My favorite wine is usually their Cabernet Sauvignon. -Robert Parker
