2012 Flanagan Cabernet Sauvignon, Bennett Valley
The 2013 vintage brought us the second straight year of perfect weather. A combination of moderate temperatures and no late season rains made it a great year for growers. Our 2013 Flanagan Cabernet reminds me of the best of Oakville Bench Cabernet from the 1994 vintage. Specifically, it brings to mind the 1994 Mondavi Oakville Ranch, which in my opinion, was better than their reserve wine that year. I still have that wine in my cellar and drink it as a reference point. The 2013 Flanagan Cabernet was fermented in Taransaud 4 ton fermenters, and aged in 100% new French oak.
The 2013 Flanagan Cabernet reflects the balanced nature of the vintage. The 2013 wines are a little less fruit driven and show more restraint than the very opulent 2012’s. While the 2012’s are beautiful across the board, I believe that 2013 is a vintage that will stand the test of time. The nose displays a tempting mélange of violet, warm wet rock (like on a hot day after the rain), and cedar. On the palate, the wine shows red and black currant intermingled with mocha and earth notes. The tannin structure is elegant with fine-grained, supple, ripe tannins. The texture is perfect.
