2012 Five Sons Cabernet Sauvignon, Saint Helena
Five Sons Cabernet Sauvignon is a joint endeavor between the Perry Family and the Curtin Family.
Jim Perry met Tom Curtin hiking in Nepal on a trip Dick Grace organized. They were climbing Island Peak Mountain, a mountain next to Mt. Everest.
When Jim decided to make wine from his vineyard, he got a call from Tom asking if he would be interested in being his partner. That was the start of wonderful partnership between their families. The name comes from their five sons between their two families - Peter, Thomas, Will, Scott and Cole.
Jim's wife passed away in July. She grew up in St. Helena and comes from a pioneer family that settled in St. Helena in 1846. The Curtin family lives in Birmingham, AL and also have a home in St. Helena. They are big wine collectors.
The Vineyard is owned by the Perry Family and is called Two Sons Vineyard. It is one acre and sits between Grace Family Vineyard and Ann Colgin’s Tychon Hill in the St. Helena AVA. It is a hillside vineyard facing southeast and sits on well-drained rocky soils and benefits from the cool afternoon winds that blow down valley.
The vineyard was planted in 1998 by Jim Barbour. It produces about 2 tons a year on average.
Rootstock is 101-14. Grace Clone.
The grapes from the Two Sons Vineyard were sold to Grace Family Vineyards from 2000-2007.
Five Sons Cabernet Sauvignon has been produced in 2008-2012.
All 100% Cab (until 2011 when they added about 5% PV). All estate fruit.
The fruit from 2013 moving forward goes to the Grace Family.
Andy Smith is their winemaker. He became deeply interested in wine in the late eighties in his native Scotland. He started at Larkmead in 1999 and has since worked with a number of the world's leading producers. He is now a partner and winemaker at DuMol in Sonoma.
In the September 2008 issue of Food & Wine magazine, Robert Parker listed Andy Smith as one of the "world's most influential wine consultants", "the talented Scotsman" and "a superstar”.
