D-cubed Cellars 2005 Primitivo is the first non-Zinfandel wine from D-cubed Cellars. The fruit comes from the Cypress Ranch in Pope Valley (the back-side of Howell Mountain). Primitivo is a clone of Zinfandel that has similar body and fruit, but differs in that tends to have different spice flavors and can be a little more rustic. This vineyard has been a component of the Napa Valley Zinfandel since 2003. The 2005 vintage has aromas of blackberries, mushroom, and forest floor with hints of black pepper and toasted oak. The structure is medium fill with nice rounded tannins. The flavors are of strawberries and earth with hints of smokiness. Primitivo is an interesting twist on Zinfandel and can be enjoyed with similar foods and friends. 222 cases produced!
