Planted in 2000, Iron Hill’s “old vine” flavor profile belies its age. It contains a sweet, concentrated briery fruit component of cherries and raspberries. This “briery” effect is a term usually used to describe Old Vine Zinfandels from vines 75-100 years old, with prickly black pepper-like flecks on the tongue. Topographically speaking, the amphitheater-like vineyard, sitting at a steep 55° angle, profoundly influences the depth and concentration of the grapes. The rocky, volcanic soil provides just enough nutrients for the vine’s struggling existence. As in the past, this wine demonstrates the heights to which Zinfandel can go.
Pairings can range from pasta and pizza to poultry and veal cutlets. This wine will showcase well with a wide range of foods, but Mediterranean cuisine may work best. Smoked or roasted duck would be perfect.
Tasting notes from Proprietor & Winemaker Jeff Cohn:
“The aromatics of this wine are intense: layers of chocolate, black cherry, red raspberry and roasted herbs de Provence. It’s as if the lavender patch adjacent to the vineyard transported itself into the glass. The velvety tannins of this wine are Syrah-like and a long finish leaves a lasting impression.”
