La Mekerra Vineyard is named after a river in Algeria, which flows near the childhood home of Philippe’s father. After finding this hillside land in 2001, at an elevation of 2,300 feet, it took plenty of time and energy to develop the 8-acre vineyard. But this cabernet franc/merlot blend is precisely what an unusual and amazing site can give - a wine with lots of character. The cab franc is planted on compacted volcanic ash, the merlot on harmonious clay loam.
“This is the inaugural vintage of our vineyard located at 2300 feet above Peter Michael in Knights Valley. The 8 acre site is truly unique not only for its diverse soil profiles that are perfect for cabernet franc and merlot, but also for the majestic views high above the valley floor.” — Cherie & Philippe Melka, Proprietors
Tasting notes from winemaker and proprietor Philippe Melka: “This voluptuous wine exhibits aromas of chocolate, spice box and sweet black currants. It possesses amazing delineation for its intensity, and low acid with an expansive and velvety texture. The full-throttle flavors integrate nicely with supple tannin and a long fleshy finish. This wine has a distinctive personality that will certainly be one to follow. It is a cabernet franc-merlot blend that can compete with the most structured Napa cabernets.”
