The 2006 Richard Perry Syrah is handcrafted from the vines regarded by Richard as being his favorites. The vineyard, mostly planted by Richard himself, is located high above the valley floor on terraced hillsides in the southeast corner of Napa’s increasingly popular Coombsville region. Soils are volcanic in origin with areas of ash and rocky outcroppings. Two distinct soil types exist: white volcanic ash and rocky, red volcanic deposits. It is ideal terroir for this varietal.
Tasting notes from Winemaker Ken Bernards: “Plum, blackberry/brambly fruit with subtle notes of leather, allspice, chocolate and mint dominate the aromas and follow through on the palate. The wine is lush and displays great intensity while even showing a little tight with anchoring tannins in the finish. The wine is more expressive given a chance to open up in the glass or after a gentle decanting. The 2006 will age gracefully over the next 10+ years, but drinks beautifully with hearty fare already.”
