2013 Longfellow Cabernet Sauvignon, Coombsville

2013 Longfellow Cabernet Sauvignon

Our Cabernet Sauvignon features two small vineyard sources, Carpignano and Frog Tree, in the Coombsville region just east of the town of Napa.  Coombsville is known for a long and gentle growing season given its location in the Southern part of the Napa Valley.  While the wines have wonderful cellaring potential with great depth and elegant structure, the plush and ripe fruit of Coombsville yields wines that are very approachable and decadent young.

Carpignano and Frog Tree are both tiny 10 acre vineyards.  Frog Tree is a younger planting and provides great power and structure as well as a touch of menthol thanks to a small grove of Eucalyptus trees on the backside of the vineyard. Carpignano adds plush and ripe fruit flavors that come from unusually long hang times prior to harvest.

Winemaking & Vintage Notes

The best growing season we have seen in our 15 years making wine.  Even better than 2012 which started a run of great vintages.  Balanced ripeness allowed us to blend both vineyard blocks together soon after fermentation promoting better and faster harmony in the final Cabernet blend.  The wine was aged in a combination of mostly new French and American oak barrels for a little over 21 months.  Our goal is to produce wines with layers or aromas and flavors and feel that this unique cooperage strategy allows us to deliver distinctive wines with great character.   Probably the best growing season since 2007 and a vintage that will rival the best of the last 25 years in Napa.

Tasting Notes

“Lush indigo color leads earthy aromas of cedar, menthol, and old tobacco box.  A restrained rush of ripe dark fruits laces the pallet highlighted with dusty leather and freshly brewed espresso. Elegant tannins provide balance to this wine and a glimpse of how it will mature gracefully.  A wine for the ages.
